Angelina Ballerina by Katharine Holabird
Book Synopsis: The story of a young mouse who wants nothing more than to dance.
Instructional Focus: (Numbers are for the Virginia Standards of Learning, generally Reading/English)
Writing: Descriptive (2.12B,3.9, 4.7, 5.7)
Creating the Costume: Is it bad that I already had made a pink tutu before character costumes were even a thought? I had created it as part of a group costume for a Halloween 5K my friends and I did a couple years ago. That meant that all I had to do was go back to my glue gun and felt to make the ears and add a ribbon.
Delivery: My students were able to make a lot of personal connections with this book. Even though I work with mostly boys, they were able to identify with how Angelina was unfocused and was always getting in trouble. The book was a great way to start our conversation on a writing assignment on goals and focusing on what you are good at and working towards something like Angelina does. Very little beats teaching in a tutu!
