Skippy Jon Jones by Judy Schachner
Book Synopsis: A siamese cat gets sent to his room for causing trouble and instead of reflecting on his choices, goes into his closet and pretends to go on an adventure as a swashbuckling chihuahua.
Instructional Focus: (Numbers are for the Virginia Standards of Learning, generally Reading/English)
Writing: Word Choice, (4.7I, 5.7f) Synonyms (2.2D, 2.7C, 3.4B, 4.4B, 5.4C)
Creating the Costume: The ears were made with the usual felt, hot glue and headband. The mask was also made with felt and ribbon. The cape is a cut up gym shirt.
Delivery: I think capes should be a part of everyday wear. I could do without the mask and massive ears, but the cape was pretty cool to wear around. The story is a little difficult to follow at times, so I make sure to tell my students beforehand that he is pretending and making stuff up. They can struggle with realizing that on their own.
