Character 14

Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business by Esphyr Slobodkina

Book Synopsis: A cap seller has to outwit a group of monkeys who want to steal his wares.

Instructional Focus: (Numbers are for the Virginia Standards of Learning, generally Reading/English)

Reading: Problem and Solution (2.8F, 3.5H, 4.5E), Cause and Effect (4.5G, 5.5J)  Math: Patterns

Creating the Costume: The only clothing part I had to purchase for this costume was the bow tie.  I was actually happy to finally have a use for the awkward, boyfriend style ankle length pants I never wore but felt bad getting rid of.  I was pretty happy too when I found that I had red socks to pair with my black flats.I found a couple of TY monkeys from the thrift store along with the first cap.  The other caps were made using colored duct tape, cardboard and the plastic greek yogurt cups I always have left over from my lunch.

Delivery:  We focused mostly on problem and solution with this book, but as you can see from the instructional focus above, there are other areas you could work on. I only had to duck a little to get through doorways.
