Max from Where the Wild Things Are

Character 10

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Book Synopsis: A misbehaving boy gets sent to bed without dinner and goes on an adventure

Instructional Focus: (Numbers are for the Virginia Standards of Learning, generally Reading/English)

Reading: Predictions (K9C, 1.9D, 2.8A, 3.5C, 4.5I, 5.5K), Synonyms (2.2D, 2.7C, 3.4B, 4.4B, 5.4C) Writing: Descriptions (2.12B,3.9, 4.7, 5.7)

Creating the Costume: It’s difficult to see from these pictures, but my favorite part of this character costume was the tail I made by felting some black yarn with a cat comb.  Spending a day at school in sweatpants and a hoodie was pretty nice too.

Delivery:  This is a fun book for reading aloud and to show students how cleverly Maurice Sendak used his illustrations to tell the story.  Once again, predictions were worked on as were synonyms and writing good descriptions.
