Wemberly Worried by by Kevin Henkes
Book Synopsis: A mouse named Wemberly, who worries about everything, finds that she has a whole list of things to worry about when she faces the first day of school.
Instructional Focus: (Numbers are for the Virginia Standards of Learning, generally Reading/English)
Writing: Sentence Types (1.13E, 2.13B 3.10, 4.8,5.8)
Creating the Costume: Once again, some hot glue, felt and a headband come together to make the ears for Wemberly (and my students did point out that my ears were backward). Face paint bought on clearance after Halloween, a pipe cleaner tail and stuffed bunny completed the costume. Yes, I already had purple tights, red shoes and a purple patterned dress in my wardrobe, don’t judge.
Delivery: This is a great book for a read aloud and it is easy to bring the character and her worries to life with expression. We used it to focus our instruction with writing different types of sentences.
